TREGARON 30 NEYLAND 27

For the first time in their history the All Blacks from Neyland travelled to Tregaron for a rugby match .The home side were able to use their new striped kit donated by Eurfyl Ebenezer for the first time to make life possible for spectators and referee alike The encounter turned out to be a cracker as the result was still in doubt until the final whistle.  A strong cross cold wind gave neither team a real advantage but made handling difficult .The visitors scored immediately as Ashley Sutton Kicked a penalty.  For the next twenty minutes neither team were able to gain any real ascendency as the game flowed from 22 to 22 and the ball was turned over frequently by  both sides.  Between the twenty fifth and thirty fifth minute Tregaron had a purple patch as they scored sixteen points.  The scrum became a huge attacking weapon and the home eight were able to pin their opponents on their own line.  After a few scrums were stopped illegally, prop Dorian Pugh picked up the ball and scored from close range. From the kick off fly half Gwion Phillips organised the exit strategy well and immediately put his pack on the front foot, after another series of scrums Pugh scored his second which was an identical of the first. The next two scores were excellent long range penalties by Phillips.  When you consider the strength of the wind they were really of a high calibre.  With a thirteen point advantage and the half nearly coming to an end the Tregaronians though that they had done enough to win the match.  On the stroke of half time a lapse in the defence allowed Sutton to score out wide from a scrum twenty meters out.  Immediately from the restart Phillips found the corner once more and the Ceredigion outfit exerted a lot of pressure on their opponents, this time it was No. 8 Geraint Rowlands who forced himself over from five meters.  Rowlands had an excellent game and was the best player on the park.  For the next fifteen minutes the visitors had their purple patch as they scored two converted tries from long range.  The first time tackling of the home defenders did not help their cause.  The tries were scored by Luke Corbier and Ben Williams and the conversions were well struck by Sutton once more.  As the game entered the last quarter and the visitors leading by one point it became nail biting for all.  Phillips slotted another two long range penalties to put clear day light between the teams but fair play to the Pembrokeshire team they threw everything at their opponents and gained a bonus point as Derek Bateman scored out wide.  In the seventy fifth minute Phillips kicked his fifth penalty, a huge penalty to edge his team in front one more.  Back came Neyland and in injury time the referee awarded them a penalty.  Sutton had kicked well all afternoon but to the delight of the home supporters it narrowly missed the posts.  This was an excellent result for Tregaron and it cements their mid table position.
